As your child reaches kindy or school age he or she will be growing quickly and becoming more active. To meet the extra demands of growth, kids have higher energy and nutrient requirements for their body size compared to adults. It is therefore important that they are offered foods and drinks that provide adequate and appropriate energy and nutrients for their needs.
It is vital to introduce good feeding habits that include essential nutrition covering all the food groups as early as possible to ensure consistency in this behaviour throughout their lives. This will help in their health a wellbeing now and in the future.
There are times however, when intake of sufficient essential nutrients may be inadequate, this could be a result of fussy eating or illness resulting in lack of appetite.
The last comprehensive survey of the diet in children done by (AIHW 2018 Nutrition across the life stages) Indicates the following:
1. Vegetables: children did not meet the recommended intakes
2. Fruit: children 9–18 years of age did not meet the recommendations
3. Lean meats and alternatives: majority of the children did not meet the recommendations
4. Dairy products: children over the age of 9 (80%) do not meet the recommendations
Dairy foods such as milk are a natural source of 10 essential nutrients including calcium, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, carbohydrate, protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin B12 and zinc. These nutrients are important for healthy blood and immune systems, eyesight, muscle and nerve function, healthy skin, energy and growth and repair in all parts of your body.
The recommendation is for kids to consume at least 2 – 3,5 serves of dairy per day. Note that more than 50% of intake from dairy foods should be the reduced-fat varieties (skim milk).
Kids need nutrition to power their development. Therefore, it is so important for kids to be physically active and eat a variety of foods to establish a well-balanced diet now and in the future.
